ͭ Conditional Voter Registration: Eligible Los Angeles County residents who miss an election's registration deadline can still vote at any Vote Center in L.A. County. Under California Election Law, Conditional Voter Registration (CVR) allows a prospective voter to conditionally register and cast a ballot.

DECLARATION OF INTENTION (DOI)

The first official step in running for office is to complete a Declaration of Intention to Become a Candidate form, which is furnished by the City Clerk. This is processed in the Election Division on the following dates:

Appointments are strongly recommended.

 

WITHDRAWING DECLARATION OF INTENTION

The Declaration of Intention to Become a Candidate may be withdrawn no later than Saturday, February 7, 2026 [Charter Section 421(b)].

NOMINATING PETITIONS

The second official step in running for office is to obtain and file a Nominating Petition*. Petitions are issued only to the candidate or their Representative. The representative must have the candidate’s written and signed request.

SIGNATURES AND FILING FEE - ALL OFFICES:

Pursuant to Charter Section 422(a), each candidate shall do one of the following:

  1. Pay a filing fee in the amount of $300 and file Nominating Petitions on the form prepared by the City Clerk bearing at least 500 valid signatures;

Or

  1. File Nominating Petitions* on the form prepared by the City Clerk, bearing at least 1,000 valid signatures.

FILING FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE

WITHDRAWING NOMINATION

Candidates may withdraw their Nominating Petitions no later than Monday, March 9, 2026 [Charter Section 423].

 

*Only forms provided by the City Clerk will be accepted.
 

VALID SIGNATURES - WHERE OBTAINED

MAYOR, CITY ATTORNEY, and CITY CONTROLLER: from qualified, registered voters within the City of Los Angeles [Charter Section 422(a)];

MEMBER OF LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL: from qualified, registered voters of the applicable Council District. [Charter Section 422(a)];

MEMBER OF BOARD OF EDUCATION OF LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT: from qualified, registered voters of the applicable Board of Education District. [Charter Section 422(a)].

FILING PETITIONS: Nominating Petitions must be filed at the Office of the City Clerk - Election Division beginning Saturday, February 7 (Open 8 AM to 12 noon) through Wednesday, March 4, 2026, between 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. All sections of the Petition must be filed at the same time [Election Code Sections 111(b) and 310(a)].

SUPPLEMENTAL PETITIONS:  If a Petition is found to be insufficient prior to the deadline for filing Petitions, a Supplemental Petition may be filed.  If a specific section is lost or damaged, a Replacement Petition section may be issued. All Petitions must be obtained from the Office of the City Clerk - Election Division.  Petitions will NOT be accepted for filing after the last day specified for filing Petitions – Wednesday, March 4, 2026 [Charter Section 422(c) and Election Code Section 310(j)]. 

CIRCULATING PETITIONS: Circulators of Nominating Petitions shall be at least 18 years of age [Election Code Section 307(f)].

QUALIFICATIONS: Registered voter of the City of Los Angeles at the time of nomination and election, and resident of the City of Los Angeles since at least January 3, 2026 [Charter Section 407(a)].

CITY ATTORNEY

INCUMBENT: Hydee Feldstein Soto

TERM OF OFFICE: 4 years, commencing December 14, 2026 [Charter Section 205]. 2 terms maximum.

SALARY: $293,672.1

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must be qualified to practice in all the courts of the state, and must have been so qualified for at least 5 years immediately preceding his or her election [Charter Section 270].  Registered voter of the City of Los Angeles at the time of nomination and election, and resident of the City of Los Angeles since at least January 3, 2026 [Charter Section 407(a)].

CITY CONTROLLER

INCUMBENT: Kenneth Mejia

TERM OF OFFICE: 4 years, commencing December 14, 2026 [Charter Section 205]. 2 terms maximum.

SALARY: $269,200.1

QUALIFICATIONS: Registered voter of the City of Los Angeles at the time of nomination and election, and resident of the City of Los Angeles since at least January 3, 2026 [Charter Section 407(a)].

SALARY: $52,0252 for members of the Board of Education with outside employment. [Charter Section 804].

OR

A Board Member who devotes his/her/their entire time to the duties of serving as a member of the Board of Education for the LAUSD and who accepts no compensation, fee, or honorarium from outside employment, shall be paid a full-time salary of $130,062.2

QUALIFICATIONS: Registered voter of the Los Angeles Unified School District at the time of nomination and election, and resident of the Board District since at least January 3, 2026 [Charter Sections 407(a) and 803].

OCCUPATIONAL DESIGNATION ON BALLOT

Candidates for office may have printed on the ballot their principal professions, vocations, or occupations in not more than three words.  No proper name, other than a geographic place, may be used as part of the designation. Incumbents shall have printed on the ballot, at their option, the word “Incumbent” or the words designating their elective office [Election Code Section 306].

CAMPAIGN FINANCE REQUIREMENTS

Mayor, City Attorney, City Controller, City Council, and Board of Education Candidates and City Ballot Measure Committees

Candidates and committees are required to disclose financial information to the public by filing a Statement of Economic Interests (State Form 700) and a Recipient Committee Campaign Statement (State Form 460), in addition to other required forms. These forms must be filed with the City Ethics Commission.

Candidates and committees are also subject to other campaign finance laws, such as requirements regarding political communications. City candidates may also elect to participate in the public matching funds program.

FORM 700 - STATEMENT OF ECONOMIC INTERESTS

Each candidate shall file a Statement of Economic Interests with the City Ethics Commission, which itemizes investments, interest in real property held by the candidate on the date of declaration of candidacy, and sources of income received during the 12 months prior to the date of filing.
