Voter Registration Guidance for Displaced Residents Impacted by the Wildfires

Posted on 10/01/2025

If you’ve been temporarily displaced by the recent wildfires, you do not need to change your voter registration. You can continue to use your permanent residential (home) address and add a temporary mailing address to receive your voting materials while away from home.

This ensures that your voting districts remain the same, allowing you to continue voting on local issues that affect your home community.

If you’ve permanently relocated and choose to register at a new address, your voting districts may change, affecting the contests and measures on your ballot in future elections.

How to Update Your Mailing Address on Your Voter Registration

You have two simple options to update your mailing address:

Option 1: Online

  1. Visit RegisterToVote.ca.gov to re-register to vote.
  1. Enter your residential (home) address in the “Home Address” section.
  1. In the “Mailing Address” section, check the box that says your mailing address is different from your home address.
  1. Enter your temporary mailing address.
  1. To receive your mail-in ballot, the registration deadline is Monday, October 20.

Important: Only update your mailing address. Do not change your home address unless you have permanently relocated. Your home address determines your voting districts.

Option 2: Paper Form

You can find the paper forms (in different languages) in any Los Angeles City and County facilities, such as libraries, public counters, or recreation and park locations.

Call L.A. County at (800) 815-2666, option 2 for information and help with your voter registration.

Submitting a change of address to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS)

  • If you've submitted a change of address to USPS, we may receive that update and send you a notice asking you to confirm your residential and mailing addresses. This is to ensure your voter registration remains accurate and up to date. No action is taken until we hear back from you.
  • The LA County Registrar highly recommends mailing your ballots 7 days prior to Election Day (November 4th, 2025).
  • You can always drop your ballots in any Drop Box locations or Vote Centers throughout Los Angeles County.

Residents may visit our offices or call and email our office and ask for an affidavit form by mail. The form must be signed, notarized, and returned to us by mail. Real estate property records do not need to be notarized.

All RR/CC locations (except the Beverly Hills Branch) can accept and process applications for vital records. Only the LAX, Van Nuys, and Lancaster offices can accept and process requests for real property. For a list of locations, click here.

Eligibility:

Only immediate family members (parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, and siblings) can request official certified copies for vital records.

Real property and business filing/registration records are public records; anyone can request them.
